Ermin Tabakovic is an emerging contemporary artist originally from Bosnia. Ermin lived in Berlin, Germany for six years as a war refugee. While in Berlin he was actively involved in the city's widely reputable Graffiti Art scene. As a Graffiti artist, Ermin completed a number of murals, and some, even to this day, can be seen throughout the city. After moving to the U.S. in 1998, Ermin realized the limited potential of Graffiti and developed his painting skills as an alternative way of expressing himself. Throughout his turbulent life, Ermin has developed an unusual sensitivity to human existence and a heightened awareness of mortality. This sensitivity and awareness lie at the very core of his work and form a platform for his creations. The civil war in his country and the whole refugee experience had a tremendous impact on him. September 11th events proved to be the decisive moment that pushed him to look into and face his own war past and turbulent childhood. Consequently his paintings have steered into this direction. In addition to being a painter, Ermin is an ardent photographer and a poet; his work has been influenced by Surrealism, Existentialism and Structuralism as well as Zen art and philosophy. Ermin's paintings can be found in numerous private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Artist's Statement Essentially, my paintings are philosophical and poetic inquiries into the nature of existence and being. My subject matter I derive mainly from memory and the unconsciousness. I use contradiction, paradox, and ambiguity in form of impossible spaces, metaphors, and allusions to expose the fallacies of established perceptions. I tend to question rather than answer, I tend to conceal rather than reveal. A sense of mystery is always prevalent. My work is meant to challenge and move the viewer to mentally engage. - Ermin Tabakovic The Art Pros Curators Dan Rojas, Vesna Anderson, and Denise Rojas |
