Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Ki's Asian background is reflected in his panel-like oriental screens and the mandala-like shapes of his canvases. Early on, Ki established a following for his non-objective paintings rich in color and texture. At age thirteen, he was the youngest person in Korean history to be accepted into the Korean National Art Exhibition. Through high school and college, Ki's paintings continued to be shown in juried modern art exhibitions. He then went on to be accepted into the nationally reknowned Hong Ik Fine Arts University in Seoul, where his reputation continued to flourish. He received a full scholarship to Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Acadeny of the Fine Arts, the oldest art school in the United States. Traveling to the U.S.A., Ki continued his art studies, was awarded a certificate at PAFA and later began work in his private studio.
